Rawlings, Jr., Charlie C.

Charlie Clarence “CC” Rawlings, Jr., died peacefully at his home in Prince George County on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 31, 1922, in Waverly, VA, the son of the late Charlie C. Rawlings, Sr. and Doris Gilliam Rawlings. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1940 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1947, with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. While at Tech, Mr. Rawlings was a member of the Corps of Cadets and the Corps’ Regimental Band, the Highty - Tighties. He interrupted his college education to serve his country with two tours in the Army during WWII, between 1943 and 1946. In 1948, after graduating from Virginia Tech, he started his employment with Merck & Co. in Elkton, Virginia. Mr. Rawlings worked for Merck, A.H. Robins, and Physician Product Company as a chemist and foreign chemical engineer. While with Merck he designed and managed plants in Brazil, Lebanon, Holland and France. He retired from Merck in 1983 after working for the two companies for a combined 35 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Laine Rawlings; his children: Cyndi R. Cline and her husband, Dr. Hugh W. Cline, Jr. of Chester, VA., Charles E. Rawlings and his wife, Frannie Rawlings of Prince George County, VA., and Raymond G. Rawlings of San Diego, CA., as well as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Ann Beale and her husband, Jack, of Waverly, VA., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joan Elizabeth Rawlings, and two brothers, Kenneth L. Rawlings, and Wallace G. Rawlings. A memorial service will be held at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, January 29th at 3:00pm. The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charles E. Rawlings, 431 Sandhurst Drive, Petersburg, Virginia 23805. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets - Class of 1947 Scholarship Fund. Virginia Tech Foundation at Virginia Tech University Development 0336, Blacksburg, Virginia, 24061, Attention VTCC.

Mary Liz, and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of CC's passing. May God give each one of you the strength to carry on knowing that CC's is finally at rest and not suffering any more.
Sorry we could not be with you today due to sickness in our household. I would not be surprized if he had a special escort ushing him home by the name of Joni.

Cyndi,

I would like to thank you for the opportunity in meeting your daddy. From his first touch, I knew he was such a gracious and gentle man. Whenever I saw him he would always smile and say the sweetest things to me. I will miss him "daddy" dearly, but I know one day, our paths will cross again and what a rejoicing moment that will be....

So sorry to hear of CC's passing. I have such fond memories of him, Mary, and family from years ago...(the good ole days for sure). He was a kind-hearted even-spirited man and am so glad I, as well as my family, had the opportunity to know him and his lovely family.....what a legacy that will live on and on and on..Love you guys, MaryLou
