Jean Mahone Melvin, 81, a lifelong resident of Petersburg and widow of Kenneth Mercer Melvin, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Thompson and Annabel Worthington Mahone and her sister, Anne Mahone Nicely. She was a lifelong member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and a retired employee of the Virginia Employment Commission. Mrs. Melvin is survived by her sons, Kenneth Mercer Melvin, Jr. and wife, Brenda of Hopewell, William Matthew Melvin and wife, Pat also of Hopewell, Thomas Mahone Melvin and wife, Cindi of Lesotho, Africa, and John Manson Melvin and wife, Becky of Dinwiddie; grandchildren, Jared Michael Melvin, Jonathan Micah Melvin, Zachary Thomas Melvin, Jessica Mercer Melvin, Eli Philip Melvin, and Rachel Marshall Melvin; and a close friend, Dale Stewart. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 16th at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Covenant Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. Sarah Nave officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 201 Walnut Boulevard, Petersburg, VA 23805. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.
