John Graves Royster, Sr., 91, of Hopewell, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009. Born in Dinwiddie County, he was the son of the late Edward Graves and Elizabeth Owen Royster. Mr. Royster was a former co-owner of Randolph Motors in Hopewell and was a charter member of the Hopewell Optimist Club. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was the oldest living High Priest in the area. Mr. Royster was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Nannie Martin Royster and a granddaughter, Rhonda Johnson. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Royster Johnson and husband, Lidge; son, John G. Royster, Jr. and wife, Anne; grandchildren, Angela J. Mitchell, Derrick A. Johnson, Christopher A. Johnson, Eric T. Royster, Laura Anne R. Moxley, B. Scott Royster, J. Shannon Royster, and Kristin R. Smith; 29 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sarah Bailey, Doris Boyd, and Rachel Winn; numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30th at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Prince George, with Bishop Robert A. Vance officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Hopewell Optimist Club, 1400 Lynchburg Street, Hopewell, VA 23860. To the whole family of Brother John Royster, May you be comforted during this sad time, blessed to know that he is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and know that he was loved by many. He was a stalwart member of our church. We looked forward to seeing his smiling face every Sunday and to shake his warm hand. You all are in our thoughts and prayers and if there is anything we can do please call. We love your family.

John was a wonderful man. He would always take a special interest in me when I left my car with him in the shop at Randolph Motors.My thought and prayers go out to the family.
