Hedwig H. Spates, 74, of Hopewell, passed away Sunday October 11, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Wilhelm & Hedwig Goelz Maendle. Hedwig was a member of the Women of the Moose Hopewell Lodge and the German club for over 30 years. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Ernest Spates, children; Isolde Williams of Hopewell, Ellen Dawson, of South Carolina, Doris Carter & husband Robert of Goodyear Arizona, Ernest Junior Spates & wife Shelly, Tricia Carden & husband Jared all of Prince George, grandchildren; Tony Dawson, Krissy Smith & husband Timmy, Jennifer Knight & husband Sean, Michelle & Misty Dawson, Kathy Amos & husband Kenny, Daniel & Matthew Williams, Christopher & Justin Spates, Brianna Carter, Hunter, Dylan & Ryan Carden, 12 great-grandchildren, brother; Dieter Maendle & wife Leslie, sister; Renate Rohr both of Germany, numerous nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T.Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday October 13, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday October 14 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Massey Cancer Center P.O. Box 980214 Richmond, Virginia 23298. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.
Dear Sodie, Trica, Ernie, and families, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I only wish I had know sooner to support you at this time. Please do know that time will help. As others have said, one day the memories will bring laughter and smiles to your face as you recall something that she said or did to bring happiness to you and yours. She will be truely missed. I am so sorry Hedy will not be with us anymore.I always enjoyed talking to her in our "Schwaebisch" dialect at the German Klub meetings. We will miss her very much.

Dear Tricia,Jared and boys, I had not heard about your mom until Sat afternoon when I was painting at church........I am so,so sorry to hear of your mother's passing.
