Patricia Gast West, 72, a resident of Waverly, died on October 5, 2009. Born on February 15, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Thelma Gwaltney Gast. She was the widow of James F. West, Sr.
She was a member of Waverly Baptist Church and a fifty-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star including the Alpha Chapter #1, OES, Petersburg and the Waverly Chapter #172, OES (charter member and past Worthy Matron). She was also a member of the Thomas Rolfe Chapter Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Pat was a former of the Waverly Woman’s Club. She worked as a bookkeeper for Spencer Brothers in Waverly for 17 years and also worked as a bookkeeper at Glenn’s Automotive and at Claremont Manor.
She is survived by her son, James F. West, Jr. of Waverly; a grandson, R. Brian Denny and wife, Kimberly of Hopewell; a sister, Linda G. Smith and husband, Richard of Pasadena, MD; a brother, Kenneth Gast and wife, Karen of Pasadena, MD; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Wakefield with Rev. Keith Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 6-8PM. There will be an Eastern Star Memorial Service during the visitation on Wednesday evening beginning at 7PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly VA 23890 and to the Waverly Fire Department, P.O. Box 318, Waverly, VA 23890. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com.

We will miss Pat's warm smile and laughter. She is with James now and is no longer suffering. The family is in our hearts and prayers.

Sometimes, knowing that others care and understand your pain can be more comforting than words. Pat was a beautiful lady inside and out. Our community will miss her laugh. Thinking of you Robin
