Thelma “Joyce” Wray Simmons, 81, of Dinwiddie, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009 at Southside Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irene Wallace; stepfather, Goode Wallace; father, Aubrey Wray; husband of over 50 years, Claude Simmons; son, Richard “Ricky” Simmons; brother, William “Billy” Wallace; and daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Simmons. Joyce is survived by her two sons, Donald Simmons and Ray Simmons and his wife, Debbie; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Wade and her husband, Jack of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church of Dinwiddie, the Dinwiddie Moose Lodge and the VFW in Petersburg. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, June 22, at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Crocker officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. I was sadden at learning of the death of Joyce. She was president of Mcnair-Truehart VFW Post #622 Auxiliary at the time I became a member. I loved her dearly and when she became inactive because of her health, I made sure that her dues was paid each year. So at the time of her demise She was still actively enrolled.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. My deepest sympathy to you all. I came to know Mrs. Simmons through Ricky and his friend Jr. Pope. She was a wonderful lady!.
