Herbert Clair Smith, Sr. of Hopewell, Virginia, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, joined the Lord on February 22, 2009 at the age of 82. Herbert was the youngest of eight children born in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Pop lived his life to the fullest. He was a member and deacon of Powers Memorial Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II and served his country in the United States Army, and later joined the Merchant Marines. He loved to hunt and fish. Herbert served as Past Master of the Hopewell Masonic Lodge in 1975 and was also a member of the Prince George Masonic Temple. He retired from the ‘Firestone Plant in Hopewell, VA. Herbert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jackie Smith; his four sons, Herbert C. Smith, Jr. and wife, Diane of Colonial Heights, Ronald Smith and wife, Kathryn of Chesterfield, Ricky Smith of Prince George and Tim Smith of New York, New York; four grandchildren, Andy Smith and wife, Raquel of Ruby, SC, Brad Smith of Eglin Air Force Base, FL, Amanda Smith of Chesterfield and Michael Smith of Prince George and three great grandchildren, Cody, Caleb, and Bailey all from Ruby, SC. The family will receive friends at the Hopewell chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, February 26, 2009 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, February 27, 2009 at Powers Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. C. Stephen Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park. Condolences to the family may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com
Sorry to her of the passing of Herbert,He was such a wonderful person. He was always so sweet and friendly. Everyone will miss him. God bless his family .Our prayers will be with you all.
Jackie and family, our hearts are both sad and joyful at Herbert's homegoing. He was a beloved husband, father,grandfather, brother and uncle. Our family will always cherish times we spent with him.
Now he is with his brothers and sisters, parents and many friends in his eternal rest. He was indeed a special family member.
