Stewart, Sr., Samuel J.

Samuel Jefferson Stewart, Sr., 87, of Petersburg died on Monday, February 16, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Ernest Stewart and Cornelia Wilkinson Stewart; wife, Barbara Anne Edwards Stewart; son, Samuel Jefferson Stewart, Jr.; brothers, Ryland, Roswell, Reginald, Raymond, William, George and Julian and his sister, Blanche Sheffield. Samuel served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from civil service at Fort Lee. He was an active member of St. John Episcopal Church and P.O.G.O. He is survived by his children, Barbara “Bunny” Hardin, Stephen Stewart and Shelley Stewart and wife, Teresa; grandchildren, Carol Hardin, Travis Clements, Mallory Creech, and Katelyn Clements; great grandchildren, Peyton and Colin; daughter-in-law, Deborah Stewart; sisters, Arline McClellan and Olive Gill and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Thursday, February 19, 2009 from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, February 20, 2009 at St. John Episcopal Church in Petersburg. Burial will follow in East Matoaca Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Episcopal Church, Alzheimer’s Association, or to Crater Community Hospice. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.

My sincere sympathy to the Stewart family.

Sam was a good friend of my husband - Herbert Miller. They played football together at PHS many years ago.

Shelly, Teresa and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Sam was a really good man and I enjoyed working with him years ago and honored to have known him. I am unable to attend the funeral, but please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry for your lost of your father, I have meet Mr. Stewart(Pops)my name for him, he was a wonderful man and a pleasure to be around.

I am sending this message from Lee and Brenda Harris to say how sorry they are to hear about Sam. Their thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time. Lee and Brenda both are very ill and are in the hospital and are very sorry that they can not attend family night or the funeral.
