Hawkins, William W.

William (Bill) W. Hawkins a life long resident of Ettrick passed away on August 10, 2008 at his residence. He was the husband of Mary H. Hawkins and was preceded in death by a sister, Gretchen H. Woodruff and a brother, Liebert E. Hawkins. He was employed at the Federal Reformatory, Petersburg, Virginia (now known as The Federal Prison Complex). He was Assistant Business Manager of the institution at the time of his retirement in 1972. In 1968 he was selected and honored as being one of the four most outstanding employees of the US Justice Department by Ramsey Clark, Adjutant General of the United States at that time. He attended Richmond Business College. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned as secretary to The Judge Advocate General of the Third Service Command in Baltimore. At the time of this discharge he was The Arsenal Sergeant-major at Huntsville Arsenal, Alabama. He was a member of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church. He was the last remaining charter member of Colonial Heights American Legion Post No. 284. At the time of his death he was a member of Ettrick Post No. 136, American Legion where he served as Commander and for many years he served as Adjutant. He is survived by his wife, Mary of 54 years and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A graveside service will be conducted in Blandford Cemetery at 2:00 pm Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Friends may call at the residence. Those wishing to send cash memorials may do so by sending checks to Ettrick Post No. 136, American Legion, 21008 Rutledge Avenue, Ettrick, VA 23803. Memorials received will be used to clear wooded area behind the American Legion Home into a park or walking trails. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com

Mary, Danny and I want to let you know you are in out thoughts and prayer during the very, very sad time. We feel very blessed to have know such a wonderful man. Bill will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. May the 54 years of memories bring you comfort in the days ahead.

Dear Mary,
I'm so sorry to hear of Williams passing and remember him from years back and all the good times we had when Freddie was living.William was especially good to me when I needed help at the sad times of my life.I'm not getting around well so cannot attend the visitation or service. I would be there if I could.

I have known Mr. Hawkins for several years and worked with him at the Prison. I offer my condolences to his family. Mr. Hawkins was a friend and what you see was what you would get. He was honest and very friendly and I hope that you stay strong and leave everything in the hands of the Lord.
