Marilyn Pruden Johnson, age 88, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She was born on December 24, 1919 in Severn, N. C. the only child of Rassie Jones Pruden and Gordon Archibald Pruden. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Jeptha Thomas Johnson; and her daughter,, Lynne Johnson Lee. She is survived by her son, J. Thomas Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Cathy of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Marilue Johnson Sheffield and her husband, Everett of Greensboro; and her son-in-law, Tom Lee and his wife, Pat. She is also survived by six grandchildren Deborah Lee Ross, Lakeland, Florida; Robert Gordon Lee, Greenville, NC; Ann Cass Simon, Panossas, France; Elizabeth Sheffield Buda, Virginia Beach, VA; Emily Blackburn Sheffield, Greensboro; and Jeptha Thomas Johnson, III, Winston-Salem; and six great-grandchildren Ryan Ross, Lakeland, Florida and Elizabeth, Elijah, Bethany, Heather Lynne, and J. T. Lee all of Greenville.
She graduated from Women’s College in Greensboro in 1940 and taught kindergarten in Murfreesboro, North Carolina for many years. She was an active, long time member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church until she moved to Greensboro in 1999 at which time she moved her membership to First Baptist Church of Greensboro.
She was a gifted seamstress and needle worker. Her knitted sweaters and personalized Christmas stockings are the pride of family members and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Severn Cemetery in Severn, NC and officiated by the Reverend Thomas Caulkins. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of Murfreesboro Baptist Church following the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Greensboro, Hospice and Palliative Careat Greensboro, 2500 Summitt Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405 or the ALS Foundation.
