Although I never met Herman, I did meet his daughter Lee and her husband, and know his daughter Bonnie. I am sorry for the loss of your father, especially on the date of his birth.
Know that I am thinking about all of you in this difficult time.

Dorothy and Family,
My memories of Herman are few, but very vivid. During each time I spent time with him whether in Oregon or Virginia, he had a very kind way about him. I believe children are very perceptive about the character of an adult. My childhood memories of Herman reflect kindness, humor, and intelligence. I remember the week we spent at your house during the summer of '96 and how accomodating and caring you and Herman were. I still reflect on the conversations I had with him and how he explained how the weather worked in Virginia (its much different in Oregon). During the short time I spent with him he left an impression on me, which I have shared with others. His caring and kindness was unique and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him. Being able to grow up with my grandfather (Cornelius Scarberry) and learn from him, I saw many of the same qualities in Herman. He treated others (even children) with respect and love.
I know that Herman will not be forgotten by me or my sisters because of the impressions he had on us at a young age.
I will pray for your family's loss and honor Herman by telling others about him.

To Aunt Dorothy and all my cousins,
We are so sorry to hear of Lee's passing. Although we are separated by many miles, I think of all you often. I remember vividly the several times Lee was in Oregon and the times I visited back in Virginia. The one thing that stands out in my memories is the great sense of humor Lee had. I'm glad my kids were able to spend some time getting to know him when we last visited.
I wish I could be there to attend Lee's service, but please know that I will be thinking of both he and all of you.
You are in our thoughts.

To all my family,
My prayers go with each of you at my grandfathers passing. I wish I could be there to share all the fond memories I have of him. I will miss him dearly, but I am glad my own daughter, Savannah Lee was able to spend time with him and have her own fond memories. She will remember him teaching her to make the perfect pancake and the secret is to not flip it till nine bubbles have popped. She says that every time she makes them. It is always the small, quiet moments we remember and enjoy the most. This is what he taught me. I love you Grandpa Lee.
