Ivey, Rev. Dr.Joseph Bennett

The Reverend Dr. Joseph B. Ivey graduated from John Marshall High School in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 at bases in the United States, England, France, and Belgium. He also served in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve 105 Howitzer Battalion, Richmond, Va. He received Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University; attended Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond; and, earned a doctorate in pastoral ministries from the Christian Bible College and seminary in Independence Missouri. Dr. Ivey retired in 1990 after 41 years of service with City of Richmond. During his tenure he served as a Police Officer, Traffic Operations Engineer, Assistant to the Director of Public Safety, and clerk of city council. After retiring from the City, he served as Minister of Pastoral Care at Westover Church, where he was ordained in 1993. He also served as State Chaplain for American Legion, Associate Chaplain at Chippenham Medical Center, a member of the City of Richmond Personnel Board, and a member of Richmond Office of Community Corrections Board. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin A. and Essie Hayes Ivey and his second wife Evelyn Fisher Ivey. He is survived by a son, Joseph b. Ivey, Jr., and his mother Jane Ivey Quick both of Richmond and two daughters, Cathy G. Davis of Chester, and Sandi K. Sykes of Ijamsville, MD. and a sister Thelma I. Collins of Chesterfields County, two grandchildren Jonathan Davis and Catherine Davis both of Chester. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7-9 at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 14, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. in First Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Raymond, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Appomattox Cemetery.
