Dear Angie and Doug,
I was extremely saddened to hear of the passing of VCU Bookstore's beloved Mr. McDowell. As you may remember, I worked under his civilian "command" there for nearly six years (sharing an office with him for four), and I have wonderful memories of this wonderful man.
Though he ran a tight ship, he was always fair-minded -- and often surprisingly tenderhearted. I remember on paydays, he always let the staff go to the bank while on the clock (though we knew not to abuse the privilege), and he always made sure the store closed that 15 minutes early every Friday so we could get a headstart on the weekend. I also recall a time when the returned check/cash box in the office safe came up $10 short. I ran the figures over and over again and was nearly in tears. I went to him, adding machine tape in hand, terrified. He listened calmly, then opened his wallet, took out a ten dollar bill and dropped it in the cash box, saying, "There -- don't worry about it any longer." I can still see him sitting in front of that old black upright typewriter, typing his own University correspondence, click-clacking away with just his two index fingers. And seems to me that one year he (or was it Doug?) spiked the Christmas party punch with grain alcohol. That was the best afternoon we ever spent in the basement of Hibbs!
In 1984, when I left employment at the Bookstore to move to Colorado, your father wrote for me a gracious and complimentary letter of reference, which opened the doors to several jobs afterwards. I am once again working at VCU (in the Central Housing Office), but Mr. McDowell is still my favorite "boss." He is truly the best person I've ever worked for, and I will forever cherish his guidance, his kindesses and his memory. I send you and your family my sincere condolences.
