Mark,
Many year ago we went to elementary school together. Your dad was my family physician. Mom loved your dad as you he would come by our home when we sick..she never stopped talking about how Dr. Holt would leave a party at the country club to come by and check on us. You and I were friends back in the 4th,5th grade and I was also a friend of Jean's.
I am so sorry for your loss.
With all my condolences and sorrow,

Dear Family,
I am sorry to hear of Dr Holt's passing. I met him in October 1984, when I showed up with my own drug problem at Penisula Hopsital - in full denial. What an amazing man Mark was. He took me in for the 4 months I stayed at peninsula hospital. I listened and learned and ended up working with him as part of my treatment. He was so open and sweet and real - he shared his story with me (and everyone else) in a way that was so helpful because he was so genuine and you could feel it.
He told me of the ripple effect - how one recovering person can ripple like a stone in a pond and effect people all around them and you don't even know when or how - He said "I'm rippling on you Kiwi - and you are going to ripple on every one around you". I've been sober for 23 years this month and now I run a treatment center in Richmond. What a gift he gave me. He really was big part of why I got and stayed sober. He even came to my wedding a couple of years later. My best wishes to all his family and friends.
Chip, Johnny, David, Sarah ---
Friends in VA wrote me of Mark's death, and I wanted you to know I am thinking of all of you. How many, many years flash through my memory!
I hope Mark and my dad are already fishing and hunting together again....
Much love, Nancy (Thomas) Chaffin
To the Holt Family
I am Amy's first cousin. We first met your father when he moved out on Church Rd. We had many good times with him, Amy and Ruth. When he married Amy we were thrilled. We enjoyed his wit and the many stories he told. We last saw him and Amy & Ruth last Oct. and he was thrilled we were planning to move to Va. He took us to see the beautiful house on the water and out to his camp which seemed to mean so much to him. We will miss them both.

Dear Chip, John, David and Sarah,
I was so sorry to read of your Dad's passing in the Fredericksburg paper. He was a wonderful person and always had a smile on his face! Whenever I ran saw him in Petersburg, no matter who was around, he would tell them that it was because of me that he and your Mom had Sarah. He would tell them how I prayed every night that she would be a girl when your Mom was pregnant. :)) You were wonderful neighbors, and I remember my days as your neighbor playing and being together. I also remember everyday rocking Sarah in her cradle in the living room. All wonderful memories!!! Hope you'll enjoy the wonderful memories of your Dad after the sadness passes. Take care! Katie (Adams)
Dear Sarah, Chip,John and David,
How sad I am to read of Mark's death as he was
such an important part of my life as I grew up in
Petersburg. You do not remember me, but I knew you all when you were young and may have taught one or two of you at Petersburg High in the mid to late '60's.
My grandparents in Hopewell introduced us to Mark and they were thrilled that he was a VMI grad as were my father and uncle. Mark was my physician until I moved to Suffolk in 1975 and my mother's until he retired. As a nurse herself, Mom had great respect for Mark's work and ability. She loved Mark and Jane and thought the world of Amy. The last time I saw all of them was at at Peter Romaine's funeral and Mom was so thrilled to see them. Then for them to attend Mom's funeral in 2003 at Merchant's Hope Church was touching beyond words.
Please know how loved Mark was by our family; you are in our thoughts with love. Sincerely, Pat (Ruffin) House, Suffolk, VA

Dear Amy and the Holt Family,
Dr. Mark Holt went to school with my late father Martin Dozier and treated all of our family. After I outgrew Dr. Farber I also saw Dr. Holt. He was a great man and Amy was a wonderful nurse.
He treated at least three generations of my family. He was loved by all of us.
