Kathryn Pittman Saunders, 81, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2007 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Virginia. The youngest of ten children, she was born in Ivor, VA to the late Ernest W. Pittman and Mabel Gertrude Williams Pittman. Kathryn was a retired vice president of the Bank of Sussex and Surry; was a member of the WMU and choir at Ivor Baptist Church where she was a member; was a member of the Southampton County Planning Commission; and a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a true “southern lady” who lived life to the fullest. Mrs. Saunders was predeceased by her husband, Alonza Walter “Rusty” Saunders, Sr.
She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Saunders Wheawill and her husband, Dick, of Richmond, Kay Saunders Joyner and her husband, Wesley, of Courtland; a son, A. Walter Saunders, Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren, Courtney L. Wheawill, Matthew T. Wheawill, Susan J. Fowler and husband, Travis, Stephen W. Joyner, Robert W. Joyner, Katie Saunders, Samuel Saunders; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Ian Fowler; sisters, Margaret P. Eggleston and Gladys P. Beale; and sisters-in-law, Frances Stamatas and Laura S. James.
Funeral services will be held in the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Wakefield, on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Steve Gupton officiating. Interment will follow in Ivor Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and at other times at the residence of Kay and Wesley Joyner in Courtland. Memorial donations may be made to the Ivor Baptist Church, 8506 Bell Ave., Ivor, Va 23866 or to the Ivor Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 228, Ivor, Va 23866. Debbie, Dick, Courtney and Matt, ours prayers are with you all during this time. We know how hard it is to experience the loss of a parent and a grandparent who has meant so much. You all have such wonderful memories of times together, just remember them and they will help you during your time of grieving.
