Gleason, Roy T.

Saturday, July 28, 2007

Roy Thomas Gleason passed away July 28, 2007 at home, surrounded by his family, after a short illness. He was born on August 23, 1945 to the late Douglas Thomas and Ruby Mae Piercy Gleason. A lifelong resident of Hopewell, he had worked for the past thirty-four years as a manager at Randolph Market. Roy is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Barbara Pittman Gleason; daughters, Kelly G. Stock and husband, Thomas K. Stock of Chesterfield, Aimee L. Gleason and Erin K. Gleason of Hopewell; grandsons, Patrick Thomas Stock and Ryan Kellar Stock; brothers and sisters-in-law, Milton and Marilyn Gleason and Jerry and Kaye Gleason; sister, Jewel G. Powers; father-in-law, Donald Wilkinson; sisters-in-law, Kaye Burgess of South Carolina and Lynn Pittman of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Blanche Wilkinson and brother-in-law, Ronnie Powers. Roy loved life; he was caring, genuine and funny. A gifted singer and guitar player, he was happiest playing music with his brothers and friends. His memory will remain in the hearts of those who were touched by his gentle spirit. He will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday, July 30, at the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Alex Roberts, Pastor of Unity Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Bermuda Memorial Park. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com. “No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:18.

Condolences

You all have been in my thoughts and prayers through this hard time. I am so fortunate to have had the chance to be around your family in the past year, and for Matthew to get to know "Pop". He smiles from ear to ear when you talk about "Pop". Even though, he may not remember as he grows up, I will always know that you and Roy have been a blessing to us. __Becky English

Barbara, Kelly, Aimee, and Erin,

I have fond memories of Roy as we grew up on 4th Street across from one another with Milton, Jerry, Jewel, and his parents -- Doug and Ruby. Roy and my brother, Ronnie, along with a few other guys, formed a band in the 60’s, known as the “Ramblers.” I may even have the old Hopewell News band picture of their group – they were smooth. During the summer, you could hear Roy and the band practice on his parent’s front porch. Was that ever a Concert! He was so very talented.

My many thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will truly miss seeing him on my stops to Randolph Market on my way home.

To The Gleason family;
I was so saddened to hear of Roy's passing. While a teenager in highschool I worked for Randolph Market for almost five years. Roy was a manager and friend. I remember best sitting with Roy after work and sharing stories.
Roy had a personalized license plate on his truck which read: FLASH45. He said his hero as a boy was Flash Gordon and he was coined the nickname "Flash", because he was such a fast runner.
My home is in Georgia and although I'm unable to visit Virginia as often as I'd like, I still think about all the friends that I left behind.
Roy, I'll miss you good buddy.

My friend for 54 years. I was deeply saddened when told of Roy's passing. When I came back to Hopewell, one of the first things I did was to go see Roy at the market. I visited him in Oct. 2006. My next visit won't the same.

My prayers and condolences go out to Barbara and the family.

Barbara, Kelly, Aimee and Erin. I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Aimee, I remember your dad just shaking his head at us sometimes because we would act so silly. I also remember talking with him when I would pick Aaron up from your house when your mom was his babysitter. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Please know that your family is in my prayer and thoughts during your time of bereavement. In the time of death it is always difficult to understand why, to even concieve the idea of their passing, please know that you will understand it better by and by.

I send my deepest sympathy and love to the Gleason family and friends. I grew up on 3 1/2 Street, across the playground from Milton, Jerry, Roy, Jewel, Ruby, and Doug, and many of my fondest memories are of the warmth and laughter in their home. I am thinking about all of you during this sad time.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Seems like Roy was around my whole life -- first when I used to hang out with Kelly and seeing him at my Dad's shop and as I got older shopping at Randolph Market! He will remain fondly in my memories and the grandbabies will now have another guardian angel to watch over them . . .

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Words cannot express the deep sympathy and sorrow that I was overcome with when i recieved the phone call about Roy's death. I remember being a little kid, going into the store after church on sundays and roy always being there, joking around with me. For the past 3 years, i've also grown to know him as a co-worker. Flash definately grew into a good friend. I'll always remember all those joking arguements about Jeff Gordon and how he was useless. But at the end of the day, Pops was always there. Someone to talk to, someone to joke around with. He will definately be missed in my life. And i'm quite sure in the lives of many others.

My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with his family and friends.
May the lord bless you and keep you, and give you rest unto your weary and aching souls.

With all my sympathy and love,
Blake Meadows.

"Big Roy" is how my boys will always remember Roy. Roy and Barabara's home was a 2nd home to the boys for about 6 years. Roy played a big part in their care, his kindness is something they will always remember. I will always remember Roy as my buddy from Randolph, a great person with a big heart. He will be greatly missed. Love to Barbara, Kelly, Aimee, and Erin.

We have known the Gleason family for years, went to school with Milton. We wanted you to know how very sorry we are to hear of your loss, and hope it helps a little to know that others care. God be with all the family.

My heart goes out to the Gleason family. I believe I met Roy years ago at a Gleason Family Reunion that I attended with my parents, Wayne and Suzanne Lowry. Dad's mother was Gladys Gleason Lowry. Take care and know that he's in God's loving care now.
