Zeb Vance Lawter, Jr., 72, a resident of Wakefield, Virginia, died Sunday, April 8, 2007 at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Virginia. Born in Harriman, TN he was the son of the late Zeb Vance Lawter, Sr. and Lillie B. Melton Spurlin. Mr. Lawter retired from the U. S. Navy having served his country in the Vietnam War, and recently worked as a truck driver for Schultz Trucking in Waverly, VA. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Foresters, Fleet Rescue, American Legion, the Eagles, and Surry Ruritan Club.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan L. Birdsong and her husband, Thomas Wayne Birdsong, II, of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Charles Lawter of Chesapeake, VA, a sister, Betty Tasker and her husband, Russell, of Rabun Gap, GA, two granddaughters, Anna King and Crystal Birdsong; and his best friend, Thomas Wayne Birdsong, Sr.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Purviance Chapel of the J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes, Wakefield, VA, with the Rev. Jim Kerr officiating. Interment with military rites will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and at other times at the residence of T.
