Winston Greenwood Berryman, Sr., 80, died unexpectedly Friday, March 30, 2007 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA. Born in Surry County he was the son of Eula Barham Berryman of Smithfield, and the late Lolie Greenwood Berryman. Mr. Berryman was a retired construction foreman for Cowling Brothers in Waverly, a retiree of Gray Lumber Co., and a former Surry County farmer. He was a member of Waverly Congregational Christian Church, and a member of the Waverly Youth Hunt Club.

Besides his mother he is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Winifred Maifeld Berryman; two daughters, Rita Hughes and husband, Felix, of Virginia Beach, and Wendy Johnson and husband, Tony, of Carson; a son, Winston G. Berryman, Jr. and wife, Ellen, of Blacksburg; a brother, Waverly Wayne Berryman and wife, Betty, of Lakeland, FL; a sister, Emily Gayle Brown and husband, Jim, of Smithfield; and ten grandchildren, Monty Greenwood Berryman and wife, Alyssa, Adam Greenwood Berryman and companion, Sheri Capps, William Greenwood Berryman and companion, Dana Strozier, Ashley Morgan Hughes, Leigh Barham Wood, Jennifer Hughes, Laura Wood Habr, James W. Wood, III, Madison Taylor Johnson, and Amelia Nichole Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Elijah Berryman and Layla Berryman; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 2, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Surry, Virginia, with the Rev. Joy Heaton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes, Wakefield, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Waverly Congregational Christian Church, P.O. Box 636, Waverly, VA 23890; Oak Grove UMC, P.O. Box 118, Surry, VA, 23883; or Waverly Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly, Va. 23890. Condolences may be posted on our website at www.jtmorriss.com.

Dear Winifred & Family,

I was so very shocked to hear of Winston's passing. I didn't know until 5 days after the funeral or I certainly would have been there. Winifred, you and Winston always mean't so much to mom and dad and myself for many years and I appreciate you and Winston for the love and friendship you both have shown for us over the years. I will be praying for you and all the family. Winston will be very missed!

Dear Rita and Family - Eighty years is never enough time for such a special person to spend on this earth. We're so sorry for your loss and pray for you in this sad time. To Aunt Winnie and Family,
Uncle Winston was great to talk to and I
enjoyed being around him when I visited
both of you.He always had something pleasent to say and always ask about my family and how we were doing.I`m glad my wife Cheryl got to meet him last year,she was very fond of him.I know it`s tough right now for everyone in the family and I wish i could be there to support you in any way.I`ll pray for you Aunt Winnie and be strong,I know you will.

All the employees of Jarrett Electric wish to express our sorrow at the passing of Winston Berryman’s father, Winston G. Berryman, Sr. We rejoice that he lived a long and fulfilling life with his wife for 58 years. Our prayers are with the family at this time of mourning.
