Mildred Sluka Anderson, 83, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2006, at Hopewell Health Care Center after a long illness. Born August 20, 1923, Mrs. Anderson was a native of Prince George County, Virginia. She married Hugh Crittenden Anderson, Jr., of South Carolina, a career military officer. They lived all over the world but settled finally in Killeen, Texas. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Oakland Baptist Church in Prince George and a Friend of Metropolitan Community Church of Richmond. She is survived by her son, Hugh Crittenden Anderson, III, of Harker Heights, Texas, and her devoted daughter Carol Anderson and Carol’s life partner, Dr. Ladelle McWhorter of Varina, Virginia, by her two grandchildren, Eric Anderson of Round Rock, Texas and Megan Anderson, and their mother, Alice Anderson, and by her great-granddaughter Celes Graham all of Harker Heights, Texas. She is also survived by her eldest sister Sue Skalsky of Petersburg, Virginia, by her sister-in-law Willie Sluka of Prince George County, and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as many, many friends who all will greatly miss her contagious smile and sharp wit. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in the Chapel. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. There will also be a Memorial Service at Metropolitan Community Church of Richmond on Sunday December 17, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. The family would appreciate flowers, since Mildred loved bright flowers, but for those who wish to donate to a charity the family requests that donations in Mildred’s name go to the Jimmy Carter Center, Attn: Office of Development, One Copenhill Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30307, or to Metropolitan Community Church of Richmond, 2501 Park Avenue, Richmond, VA 23220. Words from Anne Lamott for you: The depth of the feeling continued to surprise and threaten me, but it didn't wash me away. Instead, it was like an inside shower, or like giving a dry garden a good watering. Don't get me wrong, though: Grief sucks; it really does. Unfortunately, though, avoiding it robs us of life, of the now, of a sense of living spirit. So at first it seems that you're doomed no matter how you cut. But then you cry and writhe and yell and cry some more; and then, finally, grief ends up being about the two best things: softness and illumination.
I wish for you softness and illumination, dear friends.
Dear Carol,
My sympathies to you and to Del. I'm holding you in my thoughts and am hoping that the pain will ease soon. She must have been a wonderful woman to have had such a wonderful daughter.
