Ed Hayes was a remarkable teacher with a grasp of literature that was an inspiration to me. When I returned to school after many years away from it, Ed was my Western Lit professor at RBC. With good humor, great grace, and a most charming personality, he helped me (and the rest of the class) learn some things about literature and great writing that have helped me to this day. Now that I teach college myself, the approaches and lessons I learned from him have remained with me - much to my good, and surely due to his kindness and thoughtfulness. I enjoyed him as a professor, and later as a friend when he was still at RBC. Even though we did not maintain close contact after he retired, I was saddened to read his unexpected obituary. He was an exceptional man who did more good for more people/students than he may have have ever recognized. Great teachers like him rarely do. I offer his wife and family my sincerest condolences. Ed will not soon be forgotten. He was, quite simply, a great man.
My brother Ed wore many hats; he was a sailor, an educator, mentor, friend and companion.
A son, loving husband, father, doting grandfather
and uncle.
He possessed a keen intellect, wicked sense of humor, and just enough Irish temper to spice up the mix.
That he will be greatly missed by all who knew him, is a given. As is the love we all feel for him.
So, in the language he loved, we all say
"Bon voyage"
The family and staff of Purviance Funeral Home wish to express our deepest sympathy to Marty and family at their loss at this time. If we can be of assistance at any time, please don't hesitate to call us. God Bless you and your family.
