Audrey Bishop Williams, 96, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006 at her home. Born in Dendron, Virginia she was the daughter of the late James Robert Bishop and Hattie Skinner Bishop. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her husband of 67 years, Luther Thurman Williams.

Mrs. Williams graduated from Harrisonburg State Teachers College and had also attended the College of William and Mary. She retired in 1973 after 40 years of teaching in Claremont, Dendron, and Surry Elementary Schools; was a member of the Virginia and National Education Association; the Surry Garden Club; and the Dendron United Methodist Church where she played the piano and taught the Young Adult Class for 40 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two nieces, Marilyn Morey Eavey of Hagerstown, MD, and Sarah Morey of Charleston, SC. She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Ruth Morey.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with the Rev. Cecil Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Surry Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 260, Surry, VA 23883, or to the Dendron Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 155, Dendron, VA 23839. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, assisted the family with arrangements. Miss Audrey was my 7th. Grade teacher at the Surry School. She was an excellent teacher and one of the finest people one could wish to meet in life. My sympathy to Mr. Thurman Williams and may God be with you in this time of bereavement.

You will always be remembered as My favorite teacher and the one I learned more from than any other while in your school. Will never forget the first day of class that you made us boys move from the rear of the class room to the front. May you rest in peace and God bless you.

I am so sorry to hear about Mrs Williams What a wonderful full life she had She was a fourth grade teacher in Surry County when I knew her.
Her hair and dress were alway immaculate and always had wonderful posture.
My condolences to the family and many thanks to what she gave to Surry County.
