Bucher, Col.John W.

Thursday, May 18, 2006

Retired U.S. Army Colonel, John William Bucher of Chester, VA. died on May 18, 2006. Colonel Bucher obtained a BA from Temple University and MS from Penn State University and was chosen to attend the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Colonel Bucher was commissioned as a Second Lt. in the U.S. Army in 1971. Initially, Colonel Bucher entered the Army Reserve program and proceeded into the active Army in 1984. He served with various reserve units in Northeastern Pennsylvania, to include 814th Supply Company in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and Supply and Maintenance Battalion in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Shortly after moving into active duty, Colonel Bucher served as an ROTC instructor at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. His time as an instructor was very rewarding, as he engaged and challenged those who ultimately became future leaders of the U.S. Military. Colonel Bucher went on to serve in the Logistics field of the U.S. Army. He and his family have been stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Fort Lee, Virginia and the U.S. Pentagon. During his tenure in the Army, Colonel Bucher was a true warrior and leader of soldiers. He was respected and loved by all his Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors and civilians that he served with until his retirement in 2003. Never one to stay idle, Colonel Bucher became a Logistician with SAIC. Those that knew John will miss his sense of humor and tolerant, loveable personality. As a youth he formed the band “The Deltas” and was an accomplished guitarist. His respect of people of all walks of life was evident to all that knew him. John’s comical stories and vast knowledge of military history and world events entertained and fascinated many audiences. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all those he touched. He was the son of the late John Herbert Bucher and Sarah Barstler Bucher. John is survived by his son, John Richard Bucher of Chester, Virginia, Daughter, Ellen Elizabeth Bucher of Chester, Virginia and step-son, Tom Ropel of Atlanta, Georgia; nephews, John McAllen, Richard McAllen and Michael Ross McAllen; sister, Ellen Bucher McAllen; in addition to friend, Cindy Vaughn of Richmond. Condolences

My deepest sympathy go out to all of John's family, friends, and relatives. John was my boss when I was a young Captain in the Battle Lab at Fort Lee in 1994-95. He was always a calming influence in a sometimes hectic environment. I respected and admired him as a boss, officer, soldier, and family man.
May God bless him and keep him.

John was a dear friend for all the years that I was in the JT&E program. He was always there to help be it with work or morale. Just yesterday I had in my hands a pack of MRE's that John gave me as a going away gift...one of his many great jokes. I would like to add more but cannot right now. I cannot describe how sad I am now.

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of a wonderful man & fine officer. His engaging warm, friendly & intelligent demeanor defined his person. I feel very fortunate that our paths crossed in this life. May an ever kind God receive John into his kingdom.

I extend to all of you my deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences at this difficult time.

I knew John only briefly when he was Deputy Chief of Staff-USAR at CASCOM in 1996-1997. What a wonderful guy with whom I enjoyed a few beers at the Log Warrior Lounge in the Fort Lee O-Club. I immensely enjoyed and will always remember his great sense of humor.

He is in a better place.

God Bless all of the Bucher family and all of John's many friends.

I am so sorry and sad for your loss.

I worked with John during his last active duty assignment with the JT&E program. He was so incredibly helpful and kind to me and I will always be grateful to him for his support. He never failed to make everyone laugh during our longest meetings, which without him would have seemed intermitable!

Please know that I am thinking of you all and wishing you my heartfelt sympathy.

Rest well, my friend. You deserve it!
