Gwaltney, William Albert

William Albert Gwaltney, 87, a long-time resident & landowner of Surry County, died January 17, 2006 at Haven House Hospice Center, Atlanta, Georgia.

He was born in Surry County on November 18, 1918, the youngest child of William Albert and Edna (Deissner) Gwaltney. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Mr. Gwaltney was a graduate of John Marshall High School in Richmond, Va., and served in the 361st. Air Service Group of the U. S. Army during WW II. He was active in the American Legion, the Surry Volunteer Fire Department and the Blackwater Sportsman's Club for many years. He was a welder at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, retiring from there in 1981.

He is survived by his widow: Elizabeth (Berryman) Gwaltney, of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters: Anne W. Gwaltney of Brooklyn, New York and Lynn G.(John E., III) Varner, of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren: Elizabeth G. and Joseph R. Varner, of Atlanta, Georgia; 3 nieces; 6 nephews and other extended family.

Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 11891 Rolfe Highway, Surry, Virginia at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2006, by the Rev. James W. Browder III. . Immediately following the services the family will receive friends at a reception in the parish house of the church. A brief graveside committal service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Surry, later Saturday afternoon. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to: the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, New York, New York 10001 or to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, P. O.
