Wednesday, January 11, 2006

Capron, Virginia

Mrs. Nellie Bailey Overby, 92, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006
at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, with her family by her side. Born June 17, 1913 she was a daughter of the late Eason Bailey and Rosa Atkins Bailey and a lifelong resident of Southampton County. Nellie was the wife of the late Clifton L. Overby. They lived and farmed near Drewryville for over 50 years and produced many crafts using the supplies naturally produced on the farm. She was well known for her beautiful dried flower arrangements and was recognized as an expert, having won seven awards and ribbons across the state. She also raised and decorated gourds, and a variety of flowers and vegetables. She was a member of Drewryville United Methodist Church and a former member of the Drewryville Woman’s Club.

Nellie had a gentle and happy spirit and considered her sense of proportionality and beauty a gift from God. She never sought to enrich herself by way of her talent, yet she enriched many lives with her beautiful creations.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Sublett and her husband, Rayford, of Henrico, N.C., and Shirley Leigh Overby of Drewryville; a granddaughter, Bobbi Jo Sublett; a sister, Jayne Bailey Mark of Alaska; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 13, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Wright’s Funeral Home, Boykins, with the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. The family will receive friends at the chapel in Boykins on Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Capron Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 128, Capron, Virginia 23829. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com.

I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you all. Your mom was a great lady. I enjoyed all of the time I spent with her and our family always thought of her as part of our family. Take care.
