Hicks, III Joseph B.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

Joseph Baskerville Hicks, III went to be with his god on August 30th, 2005. Joe had suffered a stroke in late January and had been in the Waverly Health Care Center since that time. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph B. Hicks, Jr., his grandmothers, Lula W. Moore and Susie Wheelhouse and his grandfathers, John D. Moore and Joseph B. Hicks, Sr. He left behind to join him later his wife of 39 years, Sandra E. Hicks, his mother, Maggie M. Hicks, his brother, Samuel Randolph Hicks, Sr.(Becky) and his adopted brother, Samuel Randolph Hicks Jr., (Ashley), three nieces, Amy N. Hicks and Jennifer R. Jordaans (Darrell), and Vicki Lynn Hartless (Robbie), a nephew, James B. Hicks, other great nieces and nephews and a very special adopted daughter, Terri McFarland and her three daughters, Tiffani and Christina McFarland and Mariah King. Joe joined the US Navy immediately from high school for a 3-year enlistment. He then went to work at Allied Chemical in Chesterfield and left Allied Chemical to work at Sowers Marine a few years later. Joe then decided his beloved James River was calling him. He worked as a Commerical Waterman setting gill nets, catfish pots, crab pots and doing whatever else would keep him on his James River. He loved his dogs and deer hunting and looked forward to hunting season each November with the Cemetery Ridge Hunt Club. Joe served on numerous committees with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission in Newport News helping to review and create policies he felt were needed to keep the resources in good repair for everyone who wanted to use them. Joe assisted in establishing the local Ducks Unlimited Chapter. Joe also worked with the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries gathering Shad eggs trying to re-establish the American Shad in our Rivers. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-8:00 PM at the Hopewell chapel of J. t. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A funeral service will be held Friday, September 3, 2005 at 1:30 PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Henry, pastor of Charity Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Southlawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity. Condolences may be registered with www.jtmorriss.com

To the family of Joe Hicks.
Please accept my sincere condolences. I recall my very pleasant association with Joe when he was with Sowers Marine and I was with the bank. It was always a pleasure to deal with him.
He will surely be missed.

Joe will be sadly missed by everyone. "Captain Joe" is how everyone in my family referred to him. He always had a helping hand for whoever needed one. Our family will miss him very much.
