Cowden, John P.

John Patrick Cowden, 78, of McKenney, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at his residence. A native of Wise County, VA, he was the son of the late Hyatt and Lillie Pearl West Cowden and was also predeceased by four brothers and two sisters. Mr. Cowden served his country in the United States Army during World War II, was a retired civil service employee with Fort Lee and attended Elm Street Baptist Church where he was a member of the Kennedy Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Rivers Cowden; daughter, Dr. Michelle Lynn Cowden of Altoona, PA, formerly of McKenney; a brother, James Cowden and wife, Jeannie of Cobbs Creek, VA; a sister, Nell Miller of Norton, VA; sister-in-law, Judy Talmage and husband, John of Dinwiddie and their children, Robbie Talmage, Sherrie Wells and Cindy Sessums. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service tonight from 7 to 8:30 pm. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 pm Saturday, July 30, 2005 at Asbury Memorial Cemetery in McKenney, VA. Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made to the Dinwiddie Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 10, Dinwiddie, VA 23841. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com. Directions to Asbury Memorial Cemetery....from 85 south take the McKenney exit which is exit 42, travel west on Rte. 40 for appoximately .25 miles, take a right onto Rte. 1 and travel north approximately 1 mile and the cemetery is on the left hand side.

Joanne,

Although I never had the opportunity to meet John, I got to know him a little through your eyes. You and Michelle have my deepest sympathy for your loss. I know you both will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

John will be truly missed for his ability to make people laugh and smile. My sincere condolence go out to JoAnn and Michelle. If I can help in anyway please let me know.

Although I only had the opportunity to meet John once or twice, I know that he was truly your partner in life, Joanne. We will miss his services to the Library, too.
