Margaret Hartley Greene Thompson, 94, formerly of Emporia, VA, widow of James Russell Thompson, Jr., passed away Thursday, June 23, 2005, in Nashville TN. Born in Stony Creek, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Andrew and Eleanor Mason Greene. She and Russell owned and operated Emporia Furniture Co. for 60 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Emporia, an affiliate member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Richmond, a life member of the Presbyterian Women of the Church, past Worthy Matron of Emporia Chapter No. 46 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Raparian Woman�s Club, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Village View Foundation. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by an infant son, James Russell Thompson, III and a sister, Christine Greene Lowe. She is survived by her sons, Berry Hartley Thompson and wife Marty of Nashville, TN and William Greene Thompson and wife Judie of Mechanicsville, VA; her grandchildren, Marina Gayle Puinno and husband Tony, Stuart Carter Thompson and wife Jamie, both of Nashville, and Victoria Noel Thompson of Columbia, SC; her great-grandchildren, Shirley Nicole Puinno and Adam Anthony Puinno; and two loving nieces, Martha Gates and Mary Sue Dougherty. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 PM Sunday, June 26, at First Presbyterian Church, Emporia with the Rev. Dr. Zolton Phillips, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Emporia Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Emporia. Dear Berry and Bill;
It has been 47 years since I have seen your mother and even longer since I have seen either of you. I was deeply saddened by the news of your mother's passing. My mother has kept up with what is happening in Emporia via the Independent Messenge News Paper and that is where I learned the news of Margaret's passing. I have often thought of her and both of you. How many hours and days I enjoyed on Lee Street because of your mother and you two.

Dear Berry and Bill
I remember your Mom as a loving, warm and energetic person, whom I din't get to know as well as I would have liked. But, whenever I did see her - she was as gracious and welcoming, as if we were next door neighbors. I remember her mostly from a few "get togethers" at Christine's,- with Hugh Ben playing piano - or at your house. However, I know that some of my memories come from the wonderful way my Dad spoke of her and of Christine whenever we discussed family news. I remember her pride in you both and the smile she had whenever she talked about what you were doing in your lives.
Please know that my heart is sad for your loss - and that I rejoice with you too - as I celebrate her life, well lived! Though miles and time separate us - Melanie and I hold you and your Mom's spirit in our thoughts and prayers!

Mrs. Margaret Thompson was a close friend of my parents, Harry and Estelle Evans, and a frequent visitor at our home.

I remember her well.

It is with great sadness I today learned of her loss.

Dear Berry and Bill, We were so sorry to learn of your great loss. Your Mother was one of the nicest ladies that I have ever known. I,m sorry that I won,t be abel to attend the funeral. I had surgery two week ago and the doctor still has me on home rest. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.......all our love, Bari and Joan Novey

Berry and Bill

Sue called me today with the news. You have my despest condolences. Some of my fondest childhood memories include a starring role by your mom. She was always there with kind words and high expectations. I am sure you will both miss her terribly, but you should be comforted that she lived a long and important life.

I wish I could be there Sunday, but I will be flying out to Los Angeles the next day for the NEA Convention. Please give my condolences to the rest of your families.
