Barefoot, Charlie A.
Wednesday, April 20, 2005
Charlie A. Barefoot, Sr. 72, of Dinwiddie died Wednesday, April 20, 2005. He was born the son of the late William B. and Lola C. Barefoot in the outskirts of Fayetteville, NC in a small town called Rockfish. Raised on a horse farm where he developed a passion for riding and soon fell in love with the sport of rodeo. After serving in the U.S. Army in 1953 to 54 he moved to Petersburg, VA. He began his rodeo career at that time and also started a horseshoeing business while training to be a master plumber. Charlie owned and operated his own business, Quality Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning from 1978 to 1999. During this time Charlie continued to compete in Mid-Eastern Team Roping Association and the Virginia Cowboys Association. During his reign he won over thirty championship buckles and seventeen championship saddles. His championships spanned over four decades from 1966 to 1997. He was presented Lifetime Achievement Awards from both associations. Charlie was an enormous influence on the sport of rodeo and his wife, children and grandchildren continue the legacy with several championships of there own. Although his enthusiasm and zest for life will be sorely missed, his legacy will live on through all those he influenced and motivated to be their best and “cowboy up”. He is survived by his wife Geri H. Barefoot; five daughters Catherine Gaynor and husband Ron of FL, Debbie Tash and husband Jim of Dinwiddie, Donna Wheeler and husband Jason of Fayetteville, NC, Leslie Babb and husband Rocky of Prince George, Lisa Phillips of Colonial Heights; one son Charlie Barefoot, Jr. and wife Liza of Dinwiddie; ten grandchildren; two brothers William Barefoot and Ernest Barefoot both of Fayetteville, NC. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 25 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service with Rev. Mary White officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night April 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Parkinson Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th Street, New York, NY 10032, National Stroke Association, Attn: Dina’s Run, 9707 E. Easter Lane, Englewood, CO 80112 or St. Jude children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Condolences can be registered at www.jtmorriss.com
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Barefoot. I remember him as a kind and gentle man. He used to shoe our horses when I was a child, and I was always fascinated by him. He was also an outstanding plumber and my family cherished his service for many years. He will be truly missed.

To Geri and family,
We were so sorry to hear about the passing of Charlie. Even though I haven't roped the last couple of years, I have tried to keep up with the people in the club. Kathryn always enjoyed talking to him at the ropings. He will greatly be missed for his soft spoken ways and he was a real "cowboy" in the truest sense.
Cowboy UP

To the Barefoot family,
Charlie has always been an inspiration to me. Though he was a legend in the roping world, he was always willing to help the beginner with his humble, soft spoken way which I was so fortunate to benefit from. He has touched my life and I will miss him greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you go through this difficult time.
Sincerely,
